2004 was the 200th Anniversary of that first steam locomotive. Richard Trevithick (1771–1833) was a British inventor and mining engineer from Cornwall and an early pioneer of steam-powered road and rail transport. He built the first full-scale working railway steam locomotive in 1804.

In 2002 the XVII Commonwealth Games were held in Manchester, England. Four £2 coins were produced for the event but the design only varied slightly with a different flag for each of the home countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Northern Ireland coin has the lowest mintage.
