The 2002 Commonwealth Games Ireland £2In 2002 the XVII Commonwealth Games were held in Manchester, England. Four £2 coins were produced for the event but the design only varied slightly with a different flag for each of the home countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This is the Northern Ireland coin and it was the lowest mintage of the four coins. This is a very low mintage so is very collectable.
The base design is by Matthew Bonaccorsi who depicted an athlete holding a banner. The inscription is 'COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002'.
The obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Edge inscription reads 'SPIRIT OF FRIENDSHIP, MANCHESTER 2002'.
