The 2012 Charles Dickens £2Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is one of the greatest novelists of all time. Dickens created some of the most loved fictional characters ever. He was a superstar in his day, his work has never gone out of print and has spawned more than 200 movies. He's still famous today.
This coin celebrates the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens.
The reverse, designed by Matthew Dent, shows a profile outline of Charles Dickens, facing left, created from the titles of Dickens’ famous works. The inscription "1812 CHARLES DICKENS 1870" is to left.
The edge is milled and inscribed "SOMETHING WILL TURN UP". The phrase comes from Wilkins Micawber, a fictional character in Dickens' 1850 novel, David Copperfield.
The obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
