2022 Queen’s Reign £5 – Charity and Patronage

2022 Five Pounds Silver Queens Reign Charity and Patronage Reverse

The 2022 Queen's Reign £5 - Charity and Patronage

This was the second coin in a Royal Mint collection called The Queen's Reign.

The first coin celebrates the role of Her Majesty in awarding honours that recognise individual service, this second coin concerns charitable work and the third coin celebrates the Queen as Head of the Commonwealth. Each coin has the Queen’s signature, which is a first for UK coins.

The coins were released as Unc, Silver Proof, Silver Proof Piedfort and Gold Proof, all with a denomination of £5. A smaller quarter-ounce gold coin is also available with the same design. These coins are available (subject to stock) from the Royal Mint Shop.

The Reverse, by P J Lynch, shows the Queen's signature across the coin, with an array of traditional Maundy Money coins above. The legend is "HER CHARITY AND HER PATRONAGE".

The edge of the proof coins has the inscriptions "DEVOTED TO YOUR SERVICE". The UNC coin has a milled edge.

The Obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.

Remember 2022 ?
In UK: Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022 and was succeeded by her eldest son as King Charles III. Queen Elizabeth's funeral is watched by billions around the World.
Prime Minster is Boris Johnson but resigns and a new Conservative leadership battle sees Liz Truss as the new Prime Minister. Truss's economic strategy causes chaos in the markets and the Pound to crash; she resigns just 50 days into her leadership. On 25 October Rishi Sunak becomes the youngest Prime Minister for over 200 years (aged 42).
In USA: US President is Joe Biden (D-Delaware) and vice-president is Kamala Harris.
World: Russia invades Ukraine, causing global tensions. Coronavirus is still a concern but looks to be in decline. Following these events the World moves towards a global recession.
Elizabeth II (1952-2022)
Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning British Monarch ever, reigning for over 70 years. Born on 21 April 1926 to King George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, she became Queen in 1952 and her Coronation was on 2 June 1953. She died on 8 September 2022. Some coins were released dated 2023.

Queen Elizabeth II issued many coins and was monarch during decimalisation. She married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1947 and had four children. Her eldest son succeeded the throne as King Charles III. House of Windsor.
As Crowns were redenominated from 25p (five shillings) to £5 in 1990, this category contains the newer 'decimal crowns'. We call them five pound coins because there are quite a number of these and the Royal Mint doesn't always refer to them as Crowns, although they seem to have the same weight and general dimensions. For the older, traditional coins see our Crowns category.

The Royal Mint issue many £5 coins both individually and as a series. They are all commemorative and are usually available as BU and silver, often gold and sometimes with other series variants like 1oz, 5oz, 10oz, etc. There are always plenty on ebay.
Which Mint: The Royal Mint
The Royal Mint is the designated place for the UK to mint coins. It dates back well over 1000 years and is a Government-owned company.

Formed in the reign of Alfred the Great about the year 886, during the period 1279-1812 it was generally referred to as The Tower Mint as it was housed at the Tower of London. The Master of The Royal Mint has included famous figures such as Sir Isaac Newton.

Since 2010 it has operated as Royal Mint Ltd, a company owned by HM Treasury, under an exclusive contract to supply all coinage for the UK although it also produces medals and coins for other countries. It is currently located at Llantrisant, Wales.
Country of Origin: United Kingdom
The United Kingdom (UK) is the Union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is often refered to as Great Britain (GBR). It has a long, rich history.

The orignal coinage was Pounds, Shillings and Pence but since decimalisation on 15 February 1971, it is £1 = 100p, that is One Pound = 100 pence. The coinage of the UK is also a long history, the Royal Mint being established as long ago as 886AD when coins were hammered. Today there is perhaps 30 billion coins in circulation, and many (numismatic) collectors coins and sets are issued frequently in gold, silver and other metals.
