The 1718 Crown (1718/6) - George I Silver Crown coin of King George I. The 1718 crown coin is an overstrike of the 1716 crown coin which means the '8' is stamped over the '6' in the date. It's less expensive for the Mint to modify dies to do this for small batches as there is no need to create totally new dies.
Diameter 39mm and weight 30g. SCBC: 3639.
The Regal year is printed in the edge, in the case of the 1718 crown it is QUINTO.
The Obverse of the 1718 crown coin shows a laureated and draped bust of King George I facing right. Legend is "GEORGIVS D G M BR FR RT HIB REX F D".
The Reverse shows crowned cruciform shields with Garter Star in centre, roses and plumes in angles. Legend is "BRVN ET L DVX S R I A TH ET EL". The Latin "BRVN ET L DVX S R I" extends to Brunswick et Luneburg Dux, Sacrum Romanum Imperatoria meaning "Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, Arch-Treasurer and Prince Elector of the Holy Roman Empire".
