1944 Threepence – George VI

1944 Threepence Reverse

The 1944 Threepence - George VI

The 12-sided (dodecagonal) 'thruppenny bit' of 1944 was actually minted by an auxiliary mint at Pinewood Studios in London, as the Royal Mint decided to move some facilities out of London for fear of bombing during the War.

The 1944 threepence was made from Nickel-Brass and weighed 6.8g (about 5 times heavier than the silver threepence). At first the 12-sided coin was unpopular but that changed when it provided an easy way to identify the coin in the blackouts of WWII. SCBC: 4112.

The Reverse was designed by Francis Madge Kitchener who choose the thrift plant motif to reflect the thrift required during the war years.

The edge is plain.

The Obverse shows the portrait of King George VI by Thomas Humphrey Paget.

George VI (1936-1952)
George VI was King of the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death on 6 February 1952. He was the last Emperor of India and the first Head of the Commonwealth. His parents were George V and Mary of Teck.

George did not think he would be King, but took the throne after the abdication of his brother Edward VIII. George VI married Elizabeth (known as the Queen Mother) and the couple were very popular during the war years. George was a heavy smoker and died in 1952 from lung cancer. His wife became knows as "Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother" and lived until 30th March 2002 when she was 101.

George VI is the father of Queen Elizabeth II.
Category: Three Pence
The threepence, thruppence, or thruppenny bit is a British coin minted from 1547 up until decimalisation in 1970, although not every year. It was 3 'old' pence, a quarter of a shilling.

Originally silver, it became a 12-sided nickel-brass coin in 1937. The Silver threepence were small round coins with a diameter of 16.26mm, weighed 1.41g and made from silver.  The Brass 12-sided threepenny bit was an alloy of Nickel-Brass, weighed 6.80g with a diameter of 21.80mm.
Which Mint: The Royal Mint
The Royal Mint is the designated place for the UK to mint coins. It dates back well over 1000 years and is a Government-owned company.

Formed in the reign of Alfred the Great about the year 886, during the period 1279-1812 it was generally referred to as The Tower Mint as it was housed at the Tower of London. The Master of The Royal Mint has included famous figures such as Sir Isaac Newton.

Since 2010 it has operated as Royal Mint Ltd, a company owned by HM Treasury, under an exclusive contract to supply all coinage for the UK although it also produces medals and coins for other countries. It is currently located at Llantrisant, Wales.
Country of Origin: United Kingdom
The United Kingdom (UK) is the Union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is often refered to as Great Britain (GBR). It has a long, rich history.

The orignal coinage was Pounds, Shillings and Pence but since decimalisation on 15 February 1971, it is £1 = 100p, that is One Pound = 100 pence. The coinage of the UK is also a long history, the Royal Mint being established as long ago as 886AD when coins were hammered. Today there is perhaps 30 billion coins in circulation, and many (numismatic) collectors coins and sets are issued frequently in gold, silver and other metals.
