66AD As – Nero

66AD As Emperor Nero Obverse

The 66AD As - Nero

An Ancient Roman Empire As, minted in 66AD during the reign of Emperor Nero. It's difficult to see on this image, but a globe at the point of the neck means this coin was struck at the mint at Lugdunum in Gaul. The dies were made locally.

The Obverse shows Nero facing right. Legend is "IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P P P". A globe is at the point of the neck but the area is damaged.

The Reverse shows an alter with an ornamental top, double doors and decorated panels. The letter "SC" split across with "ARA PACIS" in exergue.

SC means senatus consultum, or by 'decree of the Senate' so the coin was an official issue.

ARA PACIS is Latin, meaning "Altar of Augustan Peace", and is an altar in Rome dedicated to Pax, the Roman goddess of Peace.
