The 2024 Woolly Rhinoceros Silver 50p Proof Colour - Ice Age Giants

The second coin in a collection from the Royal Mint called 'Ice Age Giants', the Woolly Rhinoceros is from the Pleistocene Epoch. Limited Edition mintage is 2,500 with a maximum mintage of 2,510.

The Woolly Rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis), a species of rhinoceros, could be found in northern Eurasia during the Pleistocene epoch (between 14,000 and 17,000 years ago). It was similar in size to a modern white rhino and thought to have been covered in a reddish-brown long fur coat.

The Royal Mint created the collection in collaboration with the Natural History Museum and with the advice of palaeobiologist Professor Adrian Lister. The coins are available in Limited Editions as BU, BU Colour, Silver proof, silver proof colour, and gold proof. Available individually and in sets. The 3-coin sets consist of the Steppe Mammoth, Woolly Rhinoceros and the Giant Deer.

The Reverse of the 2024 Woolly Rhinoceros 50p was designed by Robert Nicholls and shows the Woolly Rhinoceros with an image of its skeleton underneath. Legend is "COELODONTA / WOOLLY RHINOCEROUS". Designer initials "RN" to right.

The Obverse is the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. Legend "CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE 2024".
