The 2022 British Monarchs King Edward VII – Two Pounds 1oz Silver Proof

The fourth coin in the Royal Mint's British Monarchs Collection features King Edward VII, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Edward VII was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India from 22 January 1901 until his death in 1910. Edward married Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863. Despite his short reign, Edward was very popular as a King.

This is the one ounce (31.21g) of 999 Fine Silver, denominated Two Pounds (£2) with a Proof finish. Limited Edition mintage is 1350, with a maximum mintage of 1360. Diameter 38.61mm.

As with the other coins in the British Monarchs Collection, there are a number of offerings from the Royal Mint. The silver coin is available in 1oz, 2oz, 5oz, 10oz; and the gold coin is also 1oz, 2oz and 5oz. They also appear in sets. The mintages were low and the Royal Mint did sell out many of the denominations.

The Reverse shows the original bare-head portrait of King Edward VII as it would have appeared on many of his coins minted between 1901 and 1910. The design was by George William De Saulles and you can see the artists initials 'DeS' at the base of the neck.

The Edge is milled.

The Obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The coin was issued after the Queen's death and is one of the last coins to feature Her Majesty's image.

Which Mint: The Royal Mint
The Royal Mint is the designated place for the UK to mint coins. It dates back well over 1000 years and is a Government-owned company.

Formed in the reign of Alfred the Great about the year 886, during the period 1279-1812 it was generally referred to as The Tower Mint as it was housed at the Tower of London. The Master of The Royal Mint has included famous figures such as Sir Isaac Newton.

Since 2010 it has operated as Royal Mint Ltd, a company owned by HM Treasury, under an exclusive contract to supply all coinage for the UK although it also produces medals and coins for other countries. It is currently located at Llantrisant, Wales.
Country of Origin: United Kingdom
The United Kingdom (UK) is the Union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is often refered to as Great Britain (GBR). It has a long, rich history.

The orignal coinage was Pounds, Shillings and Pence but since decimalisation on 15 February 1971, it is £1 = 100p, that is One Pound = 100 pence. The coinage of the UK is also a long history, the Royal Mint being established as long ago as 886AD when coins were hammered. Today there is perhaps 30 billion coins in circulation, and many (numismatic) collectors coins and sets are issued frequently in gold, silver and other metals.
