The 2021 Gandhi 1oz Silver Proof £2Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who used non-violent resistance campaigns that led to India's Independence from British rule. He inspired civil rights and freedom across the world.
Born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in Porbandar, India on 2 October 1869, Gandhi later studied law in London. He went on to promote Civil Rights in South Africa and India. It became a life-long and successful campaign.
The honorific name Mahatma, meaning "great-souled" in Sanskrit, was given to him in 1914 and has been used as a title since.
The Reverse of the coin, by Heena Glover, depicts a lotus, the national flower of India. The legend is probably Gandhi's most famous quote: 'My life is my message'.
