2016 First Spouse $10 Gold: 1974–1977 Betty Ford

The 2016 First Spouse $10 Gold - Betty Ford (1974–1977)

Elizabeth Bloomer "Betty" Ford married the 38th President Gerald Ford. The coin was issued in 2016.

Betty Ford was born Elizabeth Anne Bloomer in Chicago on April 8, 1918. She was previously married between 1942-47 and after her divorce married Gerald Ford in 1948. The young Betty wanted to be a dancer. In her political life she was a supporter of equal rights, especially for women. She broke new grounds discussing her own personal problems of drug and alcohol addiction, and breast cancer diagnosis. She died July 8, 2011, aged 93.

The Obverse, designed by Barbara Fox, shows a portrait of Betty Ford.

The Reverse, designed by Chris Costello, shows a young woman ascending a staircase which represents Mrs Ford’s openness regarding addiction, breast cancer awareness and the rights of women.
