The 2012 First Spouse $10 Gold: 1881—1885 Alice Paul, Suffrage Movement

As President Chester Arthur's wife had died before he took office, the terms of the First Spouse $10 Gold series allows the use of other images and in this case they have used Alice Paul. Alice was a leading strategist in the suffrage movement and campaigned for Women to receive the right to vote.

Obverse sculptor was Phebe Hemphilland designed by Susan Gamble.

Reverse by Phebe Hemphill.

The Obverse shows a portrait of Alice Paul.

The Reverse shows a woman marching in a VOTES FOR WOMEN suffrage parade.

Following the same schedule as the Presidential $1 Coins, the First Spouse gold half-ounce $10 coins honour the first spouse of each President. Where the President does not have a spouse, then an image of Liberty from that time period is used on the Obverse. Images from the life of the Presidential term are used on the Reverse.

The program started in 2007. Each coin is ½oz of 0.999 gold and available as a bullion or as a Proof coin. They were minted at the West Point Mint.
