The 1937 Brass Threepence - George VIThe 12-sided (dodecagonal) 'thruppenny bit' was made from Nickel-Brass and weighed 6.80g (about 5 times heavier than the silver threepence) with diameter 21.74mm. At first the 12-sided coin was unpopular but that changed when it provided an easy way to identify the coin in the blackouts of WWII.
First Issue. SCBC: 4112 (used 1937-1948 when IND IMP was removed). A proof was also issued in 1937. There is a 1937 Silver Threepence.
The Reverse was designed by Francis Madge Kitchener who choose the thrift plant motif to reflect the thrift required around the war years.
The edge is plain.
