The 1893 Gold Half-Sovereign - Victoria1893 was the first year of the 'Old Head' portrait of Queen Victoria by Thomas Brock RA. This portrait was used until Victoria's death in 1901. London Mint (Royal Mint). SCBC 3878.
Diameter 19.30mm, weighs 3.99g. These 22 carat coins would have been in general circulation at the time.
Just as the full sovereign, 1893 half-sovereigns were minted in London, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. A Proof version was also minted in 1893 and is considerably above the bullion value usually attributed to the normal coins.
The Old Head Obverse is also known as the 'Veiled' head. Legend is "VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP".
