The 1893 Florin - VictoriaThe Reverse shows three shields within a garter. The shields represent England (three lions passant guardant), Scotland (a lion rampant) and Ireland (a harp). In between are the corresponding emblems: Rose (England), Thistle (Scotland) and Shamrock (Ireland).
To complate the symbolism, a crown sits a the top signifying that countries have a British Monarch. The motto of the Order of the Garter "Honi soit qui mal y pense" meaning "Shame on him who thinks evil of it" sits underneath in an inner circle.
There was a milled edge proof issued in 1893, mintage 1,312.
1893 was the first year of the 'Old Head' portrait of Queen Victoria by Thomas Brock RA. This portrait was used until Victoria's death in 1901.Images used by permission of M J Hughes Coins.
