The 1352-1353 Penny Edward III Durham Mint 4th Coinage Series DKing Edward III Silver Penny minted at the Durham Mint around 1352-1353. Diameter 19mm, weight 1.334g. 4th coinage, series D. SCBC 1593, North 1159.
The Obverse shows the crowned bust facing. Legend "+ EDWARDVS REX ANGLI".
Edge is plain.
The Reverse is a long cross pattee with three pellets in each angle. The mint mark is a crosier, which is a hooked staff, like the one carried by a bishop. The legend is "CIVI TAS DVRE HMIE".There are MANY variants of Edward III silver pennies which appeared over his 50-year reign. There were also variations in the silver content and weight of the pennies. Several mints were used. Combined with the fact that these were hammered coins, it is probable that no two coins are exactly alike. Clipping was common.
