The American Buffalo, also known as a Gold Buffalo, is a 24-karat gold coin. The American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin was the first pure gold coin minted by the US Mint. It was first minted in 2006.

Available as 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz gold and as bullion or proof versions. Only the proof version carries the 'W' mintmark; it's on the obverse on the left of the neck. Note that the American Buffalo is 99.99% gold as opposed to the American Gold Eagle which is 91.67% gold, although they both do contain 1oz of gold.

The Reverse is by James Earle Fraser and is a modified version of the American Buffalo coin designed in 1913. The image is of a buffalo (or American bison) standing on a mound, from which the coin gets its nickname.

The Obverse is also a modified version of James Earle Fraser's Indian Head used on nickels which he designed in 1913. The image is a mixture of three chiefs from different tribes who modeled for Fraser.
