The 1872 Gold Sovereign Melbourne - Young Head Shield ReverseThis was the first year that Melbourne Mint struck coins. The mint mark 'M' is on the Reverse below the shield at the crossing point of the wreath and above the rose. This shows this coin was minted at the Melbourne Mint, Victoria, Australia.
The Reverse is a shield designed by Jean Baptiste Merlen.
The 1872 Sovereign also is available with a Young Head St George Reverse.
Queen Victoria’s young head, by William Wyon, can be seen on the obverse of the coin.Images used by permission of Museums Victoria
