The 77AD As - Vespasian - Titus / AltarCopper As of Emperor Vespasian, in the name of his son Titus. Minted at the Lugdunum Mint around 77-78AD. Vespasian was Consul for the sixth time in 77 AD but did not hold the office again until 79 AD, dating the coin 77-78AD.
Diameter 29mm, weighs 12.06g. RIC 785 BMC.866.
The Obverse shows the laureated bust of Titus facing right. There is a small globe at the end of the neck truncation (which indicates the Lugdunum Mint). Legend is "T CAES IMP AVG F TR P COS VI CENSOR".
The Reverse shows a rectangular alter. Below is the word "PROVIDENT". "S C" is split across; SC means senatus consultum, or 'by decree of the Senate' so the coin was an official issue. Image credit: Museums Victoria
