The 37AD-38AD Dupondius - Gaius (Caligula)Orichalcum Dupondius of Emperor Gaius (better known as Caligula), struck between 37-38AD at the Rome Mint. Orichalcum is a golden-coloured bronze alloy that was often used in ancient Rome coinage. Weight 11.08g.
The Obverse shows Julius Nero and Julius Drusus on horseback galloping to the right. Nero and Drusus are two brothers of Gaius and were recognized as heirs to the emperor Tiberius. Legend is "NERO ET DRVSVS CAESARES".
The edge is plain.
The Reverse shows the legend "C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT" with "SC" in the centre. SC means senatus consultum, or 'by decree of the Senate' so the coin was an official issue.Image credit: Museums Victoria
