2023 Quarter – Edith Kanaka’ole

The 2023 Quarter - Edith Kanaka'ole

Edith Kanaka'ole (30 October 1913 – 3 October 1979), known as Aunty Edith, was an indigenous Hawaiian composer, dancer, custodian of native culture and traditions.

The reverse, by Renata Gordon (Sculptor) and Emily Damstra (Designer), depicts a portrait of Edith Kanaka'ole, with her hair and lei po'o (head lei) morphing into the elements of a Hawaiian landscape. "E ho mai ka 'ike" translates as "granting the wisdom".

The Obverse is a portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser (1889-1966).

Uncirculated coins minted at Denver and Philadelphia. Proof coins minted in San Francisco.
