The 2013 First Spouse $10 Gold: 1897-1901 Ida McKinley

Ida McKinley was the wife of the 25th President, William McKinley. This coin was released in 2013.

Born Ida Saxton on 8 June 1847 in Canton, Ohio. She married 'Bill' in 1871. She died on 26 May 1907, aged 59.

The Obverse shows a portrait of Mrs McKinley. Sculptor: Phebe Hemphill. Designer: Susan Gamble.

The Reverse, sculpted by Renata Gordon, shows two hands crocheting. Mrs McKinley had health problems while she was First Lady, and she often sat in a chair and made items to be auctioned off for charity. After President McKinley’s assassination in 1901, she moved back to Canton and her younger sister looked after her.

Following the same schedule as the Presidential $1 Coins, the First Spouse gold half-ounce $10 coins honour the first spouse of each President. Where the President does not have a spouse, then an image of Liberty from that time period is used on the Obverse. Images from the life of the Presidential term are used on the Reverse.

The program started in 2007. Each coin is ½oz of 0.999 gold and available as a bullion or as a Proof coin. They were minted at the West Point Mint.
