1979 Gold Sovereign

The 1979 Gold Sovereign

More than 9 million (bullion) Sovereigns were issued in 1979. Proof sovereigns were issued for the first time since maybe 1937. The total proofs minted was 50,000.

The sovereign shows Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George and the dragon on the reverse of the coin.

Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait is on the obverse of the coin.
