1965 Gold Sovereign

The 1965 Gold Sovereign

No proof sovereigns were issued in 1965.

The sovereign shows Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George and the dragon on the reverse of the coin.

Queen Elizabeth II’s first portrait, by Mary Gillick, is on the obverse of the coin. The image shows the Queen’s shoulders rather than just the neck and was used on gold sovereigns 1953-1968.
