The quarter or quarter dollar, is a USA coin worth 25 cents. The quarter first made an appearance back in 1796 and has been minted in most years since then.

Quarter dollars originated from dividing Spanish milled dollars into eight wedge-shaped segments or "pieces of eight". The quarter is still colloquially referred to as "Two bits".

Originally a 90% silver coin, since 1965 the quarter is Copper-nickel clad copper. Silver Proof versions are often minted for collectors. The current regular quarter has George Washington on the obverse, and in recent years the 50 State Quarters Program and America the Beautiful quarters program have been very popular.
