The 1899-O Quarter Dollar - Barber/Liberty Head

Barber Quarter Dollar (25 cents) also known as the Liberty Head Quarter, was designed by Charles E Barber as part of the Barber coinage 1892-1916 which consisted of dimes, quarters and half-dollars. 90% silver, diameter 24.3mm, weight 6.25g.

In 1899 coins were minted at Philadelphia (no mint mark), New Orleans (mint mark 'O') and San Francisco (mint mark 'S'). If present, the mint mark is on the reverse just below the eagle.

This coin is the 1899-O. Front and back were designed by Charles E Barber in 1891.

The Obverse shows the head of Liberty.

Edge is reeded.

The Reverse shows the heraldic eagle based in the Great Seal of the United States.

The quarter or quarter dollar, is a USA coin worth 25 cents. The quarter first made an appearance back in 1796 and has been minted in most years since then.

Quarter dollars originated from dividing Spanish milled dollars into eight wedge-shaped segments or "pieces of eight". The quarter is still colloquially referred to as "Two bits".

Originally a 90% silver coin, since 1965 the quarter is Copper-nickel clad copper. Silver Proof versions are often minted for collectors. The current regular quarter has George Washington on the obverse, and in recent years the 50 State Quarters Program and America the Beautiful quarters program have been very popular.
