1794 Flowing Hair Dollar

The 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar - USA

The 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar was the first USA dollar coin to be minted. The final mintage is thought to be 1,758, but maybe less than 130 still exist. These are very desirable and expensive coins and may cost more than $1 million.

The coin a diameter of 39-40mm, weighed 26.96g and had a silver content of 0.900. There are many variations as the coins were individually made.

The design was only used for two years (1794-1795) due to problems achieving a consistent, good quality coin. Blanks were weighed before the coin was struck so overweight coins were filed. Some 1795 coins were weight-adjusted by inserting a silver plug in the centre of the blank before the strike, but this technique has only been found on one 1794 coin (which sold for over $10 million).

The Obverse, by Robert Scot, shows an image of Liberty with flowing hair, said to indicate freedom.

The Reverse, also by Robert Scot, shows an eagle with wings open sitting on a branch.
