Lucius Ceionius Commodus was born on 13 January 101AD in Rome. In 136AD he was adopted by Hadrian and named heir to the throne and as Imperial heir was given the Regnal name Lucius Aelius Caesar. He received the tribunicia potestas (TR POT on this coin) in December 137AD and held the Consulship for the second time (COS II on this coin) from 1 January 137. However, Aelius became ill and died before he was made Emperor on January 138 AD, aged just 36; he was replaced by Antoninus Pius.
The Obverse shows the bare head of L. Aelius Caesar facing right. Legend around: "AELIVS CAESAR".
The Reverse shows the Goddess Concordia, seated facing left extending a patera in her right hand and resting her left arm on a cornucopiae. Legend: "TR POT COS II". "CONCORD" in exergue. Concordia was the Roman goddess who embodies agreement in marriage and society, her name meaning "concord" or "harmony" in Latin.Image credit: Museums Victoria
