The 2012 First Spouse $10 Gold: 1886–1889 Frances Cleveland (1st Term)

Frances Cleveland was the wife of the 22nd and 24th President Grover Cleveland. President Cleveland and his First Lady are the only ones to have left the Whitehouse and then returned some years later. Frances was the youngest ever First Lady, being only 21 years old when Grover became President for the first time.

Born Frances Clara Folsom on 21 July 1864 in Buffalo, New York. She married Grover in 1886 until his death in 1908, and in 1913 married Thomas Preston.

Obverse sculptor was Don Everhart, designed by Joel Iskowitz.

Reverse sculptor was Michael Gaudioso, designed by Barbara Fox.

The Obverse shows and portrait of Frances Cleveland.

The Reverse shows 'Frankie' meeting people. She was extremely popular with the crowds.

Following the same schedule as the Presidential $1 Coins, the First Spouse gold half-ounce $10 coins honour the first spouse of each President. Where the President does not have a spouse, then an image of Liberty from that time period is used on the Obverse. Images from the life of the Presidential term are used on the Reverse.

The program started in 2007. Each coin is ½oz of 0.999 gold and available as a bullion or as a Proof coin. They were minted at the West Point Mint.
